Cord blood banking in Thailand
The topic comes up now and then so it seems like time for an update on cord blood banking options in Thailand. This is the process of cryostorage of blood from the umbilical cord for potential use in developing stem cells for later use in treating various conditions. As far as we know there are two private cord blood banks operating in the country at this time.
THAI StemLife banks both cord blood and peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC). They were the first in Thailand to offer stem cell storage services. THAI StemLife is a joint venture between Superior Biotech Co. Ltd., and the cord blood bank StemLife in Malaysia. Stemlife in Malaysia is secretariat of the Asia Pacific Cord Blood Bank Consortium (APCBBC). THAI StemLife is also a member of APCBBC. They also have research partnerships with clinics and doctors, including Jetanin Hospital, a leading assisted reproductive technology center in Bangkok. No prices are listed on their website but pricing obtained in 2008 is 40,000 baht for collection, processing and storage for the first year and 6,000 baht per year for storage thereafter.
Cryoviva Thailand is the other cord blood banking service operating in Thailand with their office in Bangkok and storage facility in Nakorn Pathom. They are a collaborative venture between Lifeforce Cryobanks of USA, Cryobanks India, Indorama Ventures Public Co. Ltd. of Thailand, and RJ Corp. of India. Pricing currently listed on Cryoviva’s website is 45,000 baht for collection, processing and first year storage with storage fee of 6,000 baht per year afterward.
