U.S. Man Sues Thai Dentist
From Asia-Pacific News comes a story of a U.S. man who is planning to sue a Thai dentist as a result of an accident during a dental procedure. Robert Ramos of New York was undergoing root canal work on August 18 at Krungthep Pattaya Hospital by a dentist named Kasidis Wachiraprakansakul when Ramos felt some objects slide down his throat. Apparently a metal screw and an implant were dropped by the dentist and injested by Ramos. Ramos reported the incident to the Thai police who said they could do nothing. He returned to New York to have the procedure completed and apparently suffered with digestive problems until the injested items were passed. He now plans to sue the dentist for 10 million baht ($267,000) and says he would never have dental treatment in Thailand again.
This was certainly an unfortunate incident and such things can happen anywhere. So saying he would never again see a dentist in Thailand is of course a very personal reaction but does not reflect in any way on the quality of treatment in the country which is generally outstanding. Reporting it to the police seems a little odd. If something like this happened in the U.S. one wouldn’t report it to the police there. It will be interesting to see how the lawsuit progresses. 10 million baht is a big number. The Thai legal system doesn’t routinely award windfall settelements like those common in the U.S. where someone who suffered suddenly becomes rich.
